What is COL?
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a county-wide motivational reading program.
Celebration of Literacy is a four week immersion into reading and
reading-related activities throughout Douglas County with an emphasis
on children’s activities. It was founded in 2002.
Goals
Celebration of Literacy is planned to show the public that reading is
the foundation to learning and critical for future success. Events will
demonstrate that reading can entertain as well as inform.
Description
Annually, there are over 70 different events taking place during the month long event, with over 40 different schools, organizations, businesses, and
agencies involved. That does not include our financial sponsors. Approximately
20,000 contacts are made through our different events annually.
Several events are geared strictly to school participation;
however, many are open to the public.
Reading Fair
Annually the Reading Fair is held on the third Saturday in February at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. As of 2021, this has been replaced by the Wildlife Safari event.
Book Give-Away
Altrusa gathers thousands of gently used books for all ages each year. UCAN distributes some
of these books to families who receive food boxes; however, most of the
books are given away at the various reading events held during
the month of February.
